The Eden Protocol

A 30-Day Gut Reset Program by Baba Fermi. Read the full first week free — then continue the journey in the complete book.

Why This Book?

Your gut is a garden. Eden was a garden too — and the food God gave mankind in Genesis 1:29 was whole, plant-based, and alive: "every seed-bearing herb and every tree with fruit."

Modern plates are the opposite: ultra-processed, lifeless, and full of things our great-grandmothers would not recognise as food. The result? A gut garden overrun with weeds — bloating, low energy, weak immunity, cravings, and chronic disease.

This book is a 30-day return. Not a diet of restriction — a flood of the foods your body was designed to eat, cooked the way Zimbabwe has cooked for generations. Every day gives you: the simplified science of what's happening in your body, a food mission, a real Zimbabwean recipe, and a watchword from Scripture.

"And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth... to you it shall be for meat."— Genesis 1:29

Inside your gut live 38 trillion microbes — more cells than your own body. 70% of your immune system is stationed there, commanded by sentinels like Commander Dendrite. Feed the garden well, and your whole body rallies. That is the Eden Protocol.

How the 30 Days Work

Four weeks, four colours, four jobs. Each week repairs, fuels, or seeds one layer of your gut — the same wisdom Baba Fermi teaches in his 3-day Gut Restoration Protocol, stretched into a full month so the change becomes a habit.

Week 1 · RepairDays 1–7 — heal the mucus wall
Week 2 · FuelDays 8–14 — feed the good bacteria
Week 3 · FermentDays 15–21 — seed the garden
Week 4 · RestoreDays 22–28 — the full Eden life

Days 29–30 celebrate the harvest and hand you the lifelong Eden Way — the simple daily pattern that keeps your garden flourishing.

Three rules for the whole month:

  • Rule of the Plate: every plate is at least half vegetables and greens, a quarter whole grains, a quarter beans, seeds or traditional protein.
  • Rule of the Cup: water, maheu, herbal tea — no sodas, no juices with added sugar, no energy drinks.
  • Rule of the Shelf: if your grandmother wouldn't recognise it as food, it does not enter the house this month.
Week 1 · Days 1–7 · Repair

Rebuild the Mucus Wall

Your gut lining is one cell thick — a living wall defended by a blanket of mucus. Ultra-processed food, sugar and stress thin that blanket. This week we stop the damage and rebuild the wall with slippery, soothing, God-made foods.

Day 1Stop the Siege🟢 Repair
The science: The junk in modern food doesn't just pass through — it irritates the gut wall, feeding bad bacteria and thinning the mucus shield. Day 1 is a ceasefire.
  • Clear the house: sodas, sweets, chips, white bread, instant noodles, cooking oil from refined sources — pack them away or give them away.
  • Drink a large glass of warm water with a squeeze of lemon first thing.
  • Eat simply today: sadza or sorghum porridge, covo with tomatoes and onion, and a handful of roasted groundnuts.
🍲 Simple Covo & Tomato (Murorwo)
  1. Wash and chop 1 bunch of covo or kale finely.
  2. Sauté 1 onion and 1 tomato in a little water (no oil needed).
  3. Add the greens, a pinch of salt, and simmer 10 minutes until tender.
  4. Serve beside sadza or sorghum porridge.

Baba's tip: Your cravings will talk loudly today. Drink water and wait — they pass in 20 minutes.

"Be still, and know that I am God."— Psalm 46:10
Day 2Okra — the Mucus Builder🟢 Repair
The science: Okra (derere) is rich in mucilage — a natural gel that soothes and coats the gut lining, giving the mucus wall raw material to rebuild itself.
  • Make okra the star of at least one meal today.
  • Eat it slightly slimy — that sliminess is the medicine.
🥣 Derere (Okra Soup) with Baobab
  1. Chop 2 cups of fresh okra into thin rings.
  2. Boil with 2 chopped tomatoes and 1 small onion in 3 cups of water for 12 minutes, stirring — the slime will thicken it.
  3. Add salt and a spoonful of baobab powder (dried fruit pulp) for a tangy, gut-soothing finish.
  4. Serve with sadza or as a soup.

Baba's tip: Fresh okra is best, but dried okra powder works — add it to soups all year round.

"The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life."— Proverbs 11:30
Day 3Baobab — the Tree of Life🟢 Repair
The science: Baobab fruit pulp is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth — more vitamin C than oranges, plus fibre that feeds good bacteria and prebiotics that rebuild the gut wall.
  • Have baobab twice today: once as a drink, once stirred into porridge.
  • Find the powder at market — it keeps for months in a jar.
🥤 Baobab Sunrise Drink
  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of baobab powder into a glass of cool water.
  2. Add a pinch of salt and, if you like, a little crushed ginger.
  3. Stir well and drink immediately — tangy, cooling, and full of fibre.

Baba's tip: Baobab is nature's tangy sachet — carry powder to work and add it to water instead of buying juice.

"The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."— Revelation 22:2
Day 4Water — the First Medicine🟢 Repair
The science: The mucus wall is 95% water. Dehydration thins it in hours. Most "hunger" and many headaches are thirst in disguise.
  • Drink 8 glasses of water today — one on waking, one before each meal, one before bed.
  • Replace every soda with water or herbal tea. Notice how your taste changes by evening.
🫖 Zumbani (Lemon Bush) Tea
  1. Steep a handful of fresh or dried zumbani (mufandichimuka) leaves in boiling water for 5 minutes.
  2. Add a squeeze of lemon — no sugar needed.
  3. Drink warm, especially after meals.

Baba's tip: Zumbani has been Zimbabwe's healing tea for generations — it's free medicine growing by the roadside.

"I will pour water upon him that is thirsty."— Isaiah 44:3
Day 5Leaves — God's Pharmacy🟢 Repair
The science: Leafy greens — covo, muboora, blackjack, rape, kale — are packed with chlorophyll, magnesium and folate that repair the gut lining and calm inflammation.
  • Eat greens at BOTH lunch and supper today — a full plateful each time.
  • Rotate at least two different greens: covo and muboora, or rape and blackjack.
🍛 Muboora (Pumpkin Leaves) with Dovi
  1. Pick tender pumpkin leaves, wash and chop.
  2. Boil with 1 tomato and 1 onion until soft.
  3. Stir in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (dovi) and simmer 5 minutes.
  4. Serve with sadza — the classic Zimbabwean gut-healer.

Baba's tip: Don't throw away pumpkin leaves — they may heal your gut more than the pumpkin itself.

"Every herb bearing seed... to you it shall be for meat."— Genesis 1:29
Day 6Sweet Potato & Madhumbe🟢 Repair
The science: Orange sweet potato and madhumbe (taro) are gentle, easy-to-digest starches that settle an irritated gut while feeding beneficial bacteria with their fibre.
  • Make boiled sweet potato or madhumbe your main starch today — skip the sadza once.
  • Eat the skin too, where most of the fibre lives.
🍠 Sweet Potato & Groundnut Mash
  1. Boil 3 sweet potatoes until soft, then mash.
  2. Blend in 2 tablespoons of roasted groundnut paste and a little warm water.
  3. Season with a pinch of salt and serve warm.

Baba's tip: Roast madhumbe over coals for a smoky treat that's still gentle on the gut.

"Taste and see that the Lord is good."— Psalm 34:8
Day 7Rest — Healing Is Not All Food🟢 Repair
The science: The gut repairs itself mostly while you sleep and rest. Stress hormones tear down the mucus wall; rest rebuilds it. Sabbath rest is biology.
  • Today is a food-fast from effort: eat yesterday's leftovers, simply.
  • Walk slowly outside for 30 minutes in daylight.
  • Sleep early — aim for 8 hours. Turn off the phone one hour before bed.

Baba's tip: "I will give you rest" is not only a promise — it's a prescription.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour... and I will give you rest."— Matthew 11:28
